Accommodation under the Americans With Disabilities Act

We can provide reasonable accommodation to anyone whose specific disability prevents them from completing a job application, or participating in our recruitment process.  Please contact the Human Resources Department in advance to request assistance.

Coos County Selection Process

After an initial review of your application for completeness, we will review for whether you meet the minimum qualifications as stated on the job posting.  Please ensure that your application or attached resume/cover letter)  is complete and clearly describes how you meet or exceed the minimum qualifications.  Please refer to the job posting for information about application requirements and how to qualify.  Include any education or experience you possess that is transferrable to the position you are applying for.  This includes military service or life experiences.

If we have a large applicant pool, we may need to take an in-depth look at applications to identify the most qualified candidates who will continue on in the selection process.  For example, we may conduct a more thorough review of all remaining applications to identify the most qualified candidates, possibly evaluating any preferred qualifications as listed on the job announcement.  We may conduct a scored interview in person or by phone.  During a scored interview, a panel of raters will evaluate your answers to our interview questions to identify the most qualified candidates and determine who will move forward to the next step.  A panel interview consists of subject matter experts and stakeholders associated with the position who will ask questions related to the needs of the position.  During a panel interview, all applicant information may be taken into account.

Language Assessment

Bilingual preference positions may require candidates to pass a language assessment.  It may be oral and/or in writing, depending on the position.

Reference Check

We check references prior to a formal offer of employment.  Typically this includes making contact with past and present employers.

Education Check

Some positions may require verification of education via transcripts.

DMV Check and Reporting

Positions that require driving as an essential function of the position require a DMV check after a conditional offer of employment is made to ensure a safe driving record.

Background Check

Some positions require a background check, and/or a criminal records check.  Positions with Coos Health & Wellness are conditional upon the selected candidate successfully passing a background check through the State of Oregon's ORCHARDS system (Oregon  Criminal History & Abuse Records Database System).

A completed application will be considered only for the specific position applied for.  If hired, the application will become part of the employee's permanent personnel file.

Dress Standards

As a new employee, you may have questions about how to dress in your new position.  The answer depends on many factors.  All County employees have a responsibility to serve the public and represent our County in a professional manner.  Neat appearance and appropriate on-the-job conduct are required.  All employees should dress and conduct themselves in a manner that is consistent with their positions.  Individual County Departments may define appearance standards more specifically for their employees.  If you have questions before you begin employment, we encourage you to ask your supervisor.

Probationary Period
New hires typically have a probationary period (usually 12 months) as part of their evaluation process in the new job.  A probationary period is a working test period which allows your supervisor time to consider your suitability for the job and gives you an opportunity to decide if you are satisfied with the job.
