Elections

The County Clerk is the Chief Election Official of the County. The County Clerk is responsible for registering voters, maintaining up-to-date voting lists, accepting declarations of candidacy for public office, and coordinating the conduct of elections at the county level. The Clerk's Office plans, coordinates and conducts all elections in Coos County.  The County Clerk insures that citizens’ concerns are met, federal and state requirements are fulfilled and that elections are conducted according to statute and other related requirements.

#DidYouKnow Oregonians have safely and securely voted by mail since 1998? Voters passed a ballot measure that year expanding Vote-By-Mail to primary and general elections.

Announcement

Secrecy envelopes are no longer included with ballot packets in Coos County. This additional envelope has always been optional for voters but now it is no longer needed. The outer signature envelope (with the pink stripe) has printed security weave on the inside that protects each voter’s privacy.  Your privacy and the secrecy of your vote has always been, and will continue to be, protected throughout the ballot counting process. This decision has been formally approved by the Oregon Secretary of State’s Office and will save money and staff time.

The Elections Office is now sporting hot pink vests! When a Courier is picking up ballots from an official drop-site location they will now be wearing hot pink vests that say "Elections" across the back. Hot pink was chosen to coordinate with the pink return envelopes already used by Coos County.

#DidYouKnow Elections officials regularly update voter registration lists. State, local and national information sharing allows Oregon to maintain accurate data for elections. The Oregon Elections Division regularly updates voter registration lists to remove people who are no longer eligible to vote or who are deceased.

Vote by Mail

Oregon was the first state in the United States to conduct all of its elections using vote by mail. Oregon has held all elections since 1999 by mail.  With this system your ballot will be mailed to you. You no longer need to find time to go down to the polling place to vote on Election Day; you may return your ballot in one of two ways. If using a drop-site location, your ballot must be in a designated drop-box no later than 8pm Election Day. If mailing, your ballot must have been postmarked by the United States Postal Service (USPS) no later than Election Day and be received in the office of the County Clerk no later than 7 days after the election. Please note, only ballots mailed through USPS can be accepted after election day.

To ensure your ballot will be received in time, our recommendation is as follows:

  • If mailing, do so no later than 7 days before the election.
  • If there are 6 days or less before the election, please utilize one of our 24-hour drop-site locations.

Oregon elections are secure, transparent and accessible

Oregon has a modern vote-by-mail system that is the gold standard in U.S. elections administration. Your nonpartisan elections officials take great care to ensure that everything from voter registration lists to the ballot production to the counting and verifying of results is done to the highest standards. Unfortunately false information remains a major problem.

You, the informed voter, are the best defense we have against attacks on our democracy. Don’t be fooled by false information. Know the official source — OregonVotes.gov — and remember that Oregon elections have never been more accurate or secure. You can be confident your vote counts.

Always use official, trusted sources of information
